The ScreenFood Project consortium organised a webinar focused on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)Â in relation with food safety, on 11 May 2026, online, with over 100 participants joining the discussions. The webinar is part of a series that will explore the PPWR requirements and connect them to ongoing metrological research, material-related high-risk potentials, and advanced analytical approaches for identifying potential contaminants.
This first event entitled ‘The Road to 2026: general requirements and a PFAS deep dive’, provided a comprehensive overview of the PPWR, its background, targets and timeline, while also addressing the requirements for substances of concern.
In particular, the upcoming PFAS limits (expected to come into effect in August 2026) were discussed in light of ongoing research within the ScreenFood project. Important attention was given to the impact that PPWR has on laboratory testing, its applicability and current limitations. In addition, key data and results were shared as part of the ScreenFood project research on screened food packaging materials for PFAS and trace metals.
This webinar series is an important part of the ScreenFood project, aiming to share knowledge and capacity building on food and food packaging safety to a broad range of stakeholders – from academia and standardization bodies to industry, while fostering informed discussions, and supporting the implementation of research outcomes.
